Mayor Elke Carr confirmed with the Austrian press APA that several students, at least one adult, and a suspicious shooter were among the dead.
School shootings are far more rare than Europe than in the US, but in recent years Europe has been shaken by attacks at schools and universities and is not linked to terrorism.
“A police operation is currently underway… The reason for the deployment is because gunshots were heard in the building,” police said in X.
Police and Home Office officials were not immediately accessible by AFP.
“At this point, the situation is very unknown,” a police source told Austrian APA news agency.
EU diplomat Kaja Kallas declared he was “deeply shocked” by the shooting report on Tuesday.
“Every child should feel safe in school and be able to learn freely from fear and violence,” Karasu wrote on X.
