More than 20 other people were injured in a multi-vehicle collision in Tarlac City, north of Manila, during the heavy travel time at May Day Holiday, the AP reported.
The bus driver, one of the injured, was taken into custody and initially told investigators he fell asleep shortly before the crash, Tarlac Police Chief Lt. Col. Romell Santos told reporters.
The bus crashed into a van, which was in a paid booth alongside three other vehicles. Ten deaths, including a child, were in the van, but they were pinned from behind between a whimsical bus and another vehicle in front, police said.
Police said the couple was killed in the car in a collision that occurred around noon in the summer heat, adding that many of the injured were passengers on the bus.
Vehicle accidents are common in the Philippines due to lack of safety and traffic regulations, poor vehicles and reckless driving.
