“A total of 32 police officers have been injured. Of these, 30 officers have been minor injuries and one seriously injured, but fortunately, he is in stable condition and one has moderate injuries,” Darakhvelidze said.
The opposition party rally took place on Saturday at Freedom Square in Tbilisi on the day of the country’s city elections. Former General Murtaz Zoderava, a former prosecutor and one of the organizers of the rally, was convened from the stage to “grab the keys to the President’s Palace.” Some protesters then headed to nearby presidential residences. Protesters violated the fence surrounding the settlement, and riot police used water cannons and tear gas to push them back.
On Sunday night, the Ministry of Home Affairs arrested five protest organizers, including Zoderava and opera singer Paata Bartulaz, calling for the overthrow of the government and organising group violence. They will be in prison for up to nine years.
