Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan officially declared Cyprus’ “right to occupation,” the Daily Tukik reported.
They approved UN Security Council resolutions 541 and 550.
Relations with Central Asia members of Turkish Countries Organizations (OTS) have pledged to bury the OTS, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan pledge to support Cyprus’ sovereignty and effectively embed the OTS and recognise the North.
In a joint declaration at the Inter-European Asian Summit held in Samarkand on April 4, the three Central Asian countries explicitly approved UN Security Council resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984).
The declaration states, “The EU and Central Asian countries affirmed their strong commitment to UN Security Council Resolutions 541 and 550, saying that the development of their relationship depends on compliance with this principle.”
Turkish Cypriot authorities had anticipated travelling towards northern Cyprus, occupied by Otto officials, towards approval, but instead witnessed three OT member states opening embassies and upgrading diplomatic relations with the Republic of Cyprus.
Paragraph 4 of the Declaration emphasizes the parties’ decision to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states in the International Forum and to avoid measures that violate this principle.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has maintained an astonishing silence on both developments and has not issued a public statement about the openings of the embassy in Nicosia or the summit declaration, which does not rule out the diplomatic initiative behind closed doors.
The timing remains particularly important as it follows the first informal meeting on Cyprus in four years. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced in Geneva on March 18 that debate would be redisclosed in late July despite efforts by Turkish and Turkish Cyprus leader El Sin Tatar to block the UN initiative to resume Cyprus negotiations.
Since the 2021 Geneva Conference, Turkey and the Tatar have refused to discuss anything with the United Nations beyond the perception of the occupied north, promoting solutions for the two provinces and leveraging Turkish influence within the OTS to advance this position.
Tatar attended the OTS Summit in Bishkek as an “honorary guest” in 2024, appearing in official photos along with other OTS leaders, urging strong opposition from both Cyprus and the European Union.
Turkish media outlet Turkiye has documented the response to these developments. Professor Faik Alibekkerli of the National Academy of Scientists of Azerbaijan said, “We all expected that ‘Cyprus’ would join the organisation of the Turkish countries and that their brother countries would open embassies in ‘the Republic of Cyprus in northern Turkey.”
