The tragedy occurred in Bilarcoto, a village of Davia’s commune in the Kennyva district of the Kays region.
Local officials who spoke anonymously with Xinhua said they allegedly fell into a mine of artisans who had worked for money.
Public servants and other witnesses confirmed that “48 women died on the spot” and about 10 seriously injured individuals were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
“Some sources have reported around 50 deaths. However, for now, numbers may increase at any time due to the severity of some injuries, so it is also tentatively accurate. It is difficult to confirm the sacrifices,” authorities told Xinhua. Rescue operations are still underway.
On January 29th, a gold mine collapsed at a mine site in the Danga area of Kangaba district of the Koulikoro region, killing around 10 people.
