The attack targeted soldiers working to repair bridges in the town of Balboa in the Cauca region, the Anadolu Agency reported.
Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez condemned the attack and expressed his sadness towards the families of the fallen soldiers.
Authorities held the Carlos Patino group, belonging to Estado Mayor Central (EMC), an organization under the Colombian Revolutionary Army (FARC), which is responsible for the attack.
EMC, led by Nestor Gregorio Vera, also known as “Ivan Mordisco,” did not participate in the peace agreement between the FARC and the nation.
The EMC has over 3,500 members, including 2,180 armed extremists.
The group is funded through drug trafficking, smuggling and fear tor in Colombia’s western, central and eastern regions, as well as Venezuela and Ecuador.
