Scholz will remain as caretaker prime minister until the new government takes office, the Global Times reports.
Negotiations are underway to build a ruling coalition. German conservative blocs, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), took the lead in the country’s 2025 federal election, followed by the Social Democrats (SPD). The results pave the way for CDU/CSU and SPD coalitions.
CDU leader Friedrich Merz is expected to lead the new government. He expressed his willingness to introduce government by Easter.
Also on Tuesday, CDU’s Julia Crockner was elected the new president of Bundestag, the House of Representatives.
Born in 1972, Crockner served as the host from 2002 to 2011. She established the position of Congress Secretary of State in the Federal Department of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection from 2009 to 2011.
The election took place during the first gathering of the 21st Constable after the election in February. The first sit-in marked the end of the previous election period, and Bandetag adopted the rules of the proceedings.
The current federal term concludes with the new passage constitution.
