Tehran – A recent ranking published by Iran’s Shimago 2024 has 75,501 documents, ranking second in Islamic countries.
The country ranks 17th globally, dropping one position in the ranking compared to the past year. Türkiye (including 82150 documents and Saudi Arabia (including 72167 documents) ranked first and third respectively, Mehr News Agency reported.
In 2022, the country published over 78,000 documents in Scopus, but in 2023 the number of documents reached 74,000 was reduced. This trend has been rising in 2024, but has yet to reach the figures released in 2022.
According to the report, Iran ranks second and 15th in terms of citations (89,492) respectively, both regionally and globally. Over the past five years, the country’s global ranking has improved from 19 to 15.
Saudi Arabia and Turkey rank first and third, with 121,838 and 81,106 quotes respectively.
China (including 1215824 documents), the United States (including 743,884 documents), and India (351,928) are ranked third from number one in the 2024 Shimago rankings.
Iran plans to promote its scientific production ranking from 17 to 12 by 2027.
Especially in the last three years, Iran’s ranking in public papers by Iranian scholars has decreased from 15 to 17.
said Shahin Ahoundzadeh, an official from the Ministry of Health.
Country advances in scientific production need to compensate for research and technology regression by providing funding, promoting research and promoting meritocracy that reduces the migration of young elites.
2025 Iranian institutions include 195
Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2025 has placed 195 Iranian universities among the top institutions in the world compared to 197 universities in 2024.
SIR is a classification of academic and research-related institutions ranked by a combined index combining three different sets of indicators based on research performance, innovation outcomes, and social impacts measured by web visibility.
Research ranking refers to the amount, impact and quality of research results from an institution.
The ranking of innovations is calculated for the number of patent applications for an institution and the citations that its research output receives from the patent.
Social rankings are based on the number of pages on an institution’s website and the number of backlinks and mentions from social networks.
The latest rankings include the top five institutions: Tehran University Tehran University, Shahid Beshti University Medical Health Services, and Tablis University Medical University Medical University.
Compared to all sectors (percentile), Tehran Medical University ranks number one in West Asia and sixth in the world. The highest ranking of universities is Dentistry, ranked 1st in West Asia and 37th in the world, respectively.
Tehran University ranked number one in the country, second in West Asia and 11th in the world. The best rankings for universities are business, management and accounting, ranking first in West Asia and 53rd in the world.
Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences Health Services University ranks 2nd in Iran, 4th in West Asia and 17th in the world. The highest ranking of universities is Dentistry, ranked 5th in West Asia and 68th in the world.
Tabliz Medical College ranked second in the nation. It ranked 5th in West Asia and 23rd in the world. The best rankings for the university are in pharmacology, toxicology and pharmaceuticals, ranked fifth in West Asia and 53rd in the world.
Iran’s Medical University ranks third in the country. It ranks 6th in West Asia and 24th in the world. The highest rankings for universities are obstetrics and gynecology, ranked 8th in West Asia and 202nd in the world.
Recent Rankings
The 15th edition of the 2025 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings included 17 Iranian universities in 21 subject entries compared to 17 Iranian universities in 2024.
Iranian universities are ranked among the top institutions in three faculty disciplines, including engineering and technology. Life Sciences and Medicine; Natural Sciences, Mehr News Agency reported.
Tehran University, with its global rankings of 280, is the first to be placed in the country. It was ranked 346 worldwide in 2024.
Sharif Institute of Technology ranks second in the country, with its global ranking rising to 292 from 410-450 this year in 2024.
Amilkavir Institute of Technology (451-500) and Iran University of Science and Technology (501-550) will be third and fourth, respectively. This year it is included in the QS rankings.
Times Higher Education (The) World University Rankings (WUR) ranks 85 Iranian universities among the world’s top universities, according to International Outlook 2025.
Sharif Institute of Technology (global rankings of 301-350) is the top university in the country.
Amilkavir University of Technology and Iran University of Science and Technology are both second in the global rankings of 351-400.
Kermanshah Medical Sciences University and Tehran University ranked third in the global rankings of 401-500.
World University Rankings 2025 placed 81 Iranian universities among the top universities in the world in 10 of 11 subject regions compared to 73 universities in 2024.
The best rankings in Iran are computer science and engineering.
The University of Tehran (401-500), Feldousi Mashhad University, and Shahid Beshti University (501-600), Aramitabay University, and Isfahan University (601) are ranked number one in the arts and humanities.
The University of Tehran (201-250), Sharif University of Technology (301-400), Feldousimashhad University and Iran University of Science and Technology (401-500) are the top four institutions in business and economics.
