Tehran – Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Alileza Jahangiri, for the Caspian Sea Issues, and Murad Atajanov, the special representative of Turkmenistan on the Caspian Sea Issues, met at Ashgabat, Turkmenistan to discuss the Caspian Sea Issues.
The meeting focused on maritime boundaries, fishing area boundaries, baseline drawings, the Caspian Sea’s seabed and undersoil boundaries, and related documents, Mehr’s news agency reported.
Authorities also discussed environmental challenges and lowered water levels in the Caspian Sea.
Pezeshkian: Iran has pledged to expand its ties with Turkmenistan
At a meeting with Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister on February 12, the meeting with Iranian President Massaud Pezeshkian and Rashid Meredov reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to foster strong ties with Iranian neighbors and emphasized the importance of neighbourship as a foundation for the country’s foreign policy.
He highlighted Iran’s dedication to expanding partnerships with regional countries, longtime ally with deep cultural and historical ties with Iran, particularly those with regional ties.
An important focus of the discussion was the upcoming summit of the Caspian Sea coastal province, scheduled to be held in Tehran. Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s commitment to promoting regional stability and cooperation. “Iran is looking to expand its relationship with the Caspian Sea based on peace, friendship and good neighbors. This approach will be central to discussions at upcoming summits and work towards practical solutions to strengthen regional partnerships,” he said.
Foreign Minister Meredov praised Iran’s progress in trivia relations, giving a warm greeting from the Turkmenistan leader, calling for further expansion of economic ties. He pointed to existing agreements and joint projects between Iran and Turkmen companies, particularly in transportation and energy, as key areas of growth.
“The relationship between our two countries is extremely important to the Turkmenistan government,” he said. “We want to strengthen cooperation in all areas.”
The Minister invited President Pezeshkian to participate in the upcoming International Peace and Trust Conference held in Turkmenistan. In return, he announced that Turkmenistan would send a high-ranking delegation to attend the Caspian Sea summit in Tehran.
In August 2024, Iran’s Ambassador to Turkmenistan attended the International Conference on Scientific Practices entitled “Cooperation in the Caspian Sea – Operations for Sustainable Development” held in the National Tourist Zone of Awaza in Turkmenistan on August 12th, marking Caspian Sea Day.
A wide range of issues regarding the establishment of sustainable development, supporting cooperation between coastal countries, were reviewed and discussed by participants.
Speaking at the meeting, Ali Mojitaba Luzbahani said the Caspian Sea is a general heritage and a point of connection between coastal states. It is the source of blessings to over 270 million people.
The Caspian Sea region is a strategic region that connects corridors from north to south and east to west. It is the obligation of coastal regions to protect Caspians for future generations.
He stressed that compliance with agreed environmental standards and considering potential cross-border environmental impacts should be paid more attention when implementing national and regional planning.
