Authorities did not say how many people were killed in the crash crash, but Illinois State Police said it was a “active and ongoing investigation of a deadly aircraft.”
The plane crashed at Trilla, about 65 miles south of Champaign, around 10:15am. State police said the plane’s debris were scattered across the road and closed several hours after the crash.
The plane, a single-engine Cessna 180, crashed about 12 miles from Coles County Memorial Airport in Mattoon, Illinois, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are under investigation. It was unclear whether the person on the ground was injured.
“We are keeping people affected by the crash of our planes today,” Illinois Governor J.B. Pretzker said on social media. “Thank you to the first responder who came to the scene.”
At least nine people were killed last week in a crash on a small plane.
A small plane crashed into a river in eastern Nebraska on Friday night, killing three people on board, officials said. On April 12th, a small twin-engine plane crashed in a muddy field in New York, with all six on board.
Experts say flight remains the safest mode of transport, but a number of frenzy collisions involving commercial airlines at the beginning of the year have caused travelers’ fears over the flight.
