After hesitation, Emmanuel Macron was able to recognize the Palestinian state “in June,” Le Monde reported.
“We must move towards awareness (of the Palestinian province) and we will do so in the coming months,” the French president said in an interview broadcast on television channel France 5.
He added that the move could be made at the UN conference, which is scheduled to be held in New York in June.
“I’ll do it because I believe it’s right at some point, and because I have to be able to make sure that all the people who defend Palestine can recognize Israel in turn,” Macron said.
Such an awareness added that France would allow “to be made clear in the fight against those who deny Israel’s right to exist.”
Given its pioneering role in the Palestinian issue, this announcement may seem somewhat behind. Of the 193 UN member states, 147 already recognize Palestinian states, including 12 of the 27 members of the European Union.
