Oman has been mediating between Iran and the United States as US President Donald Trump seeks an agreement to curb Iran’s nuclear program. Washington believes it is intended to develop nuclear weapons that Iran denied.
“This topic is in the context of Oman’s mediation efforts…” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters at a briefing in the Kremlin on Tuesday.
Kremlin foreign policy aide Ely Ushakov also said that, according to the statements both sides reported, “we discussed progress in negotiations between Iran and the US representatives.”
“We’ll see what the outcome will be. We’re maintaining close contact with our Iranian colleagues. We’ll help you whenever we can,” Ushakov quoted.
Trump threatened to bomb Iran unless he reached a deal. Iran said there was no trade under the threat of artillery fire.
Russia signed a strategic partnership treaty with Iran in January, seeking to improve relations with the Trump administration.
Moscow plays a role with Iran in nuclear negotiations as the signatories of the previous Landmark 2015 nuclear deal that Trump abandoned in his first term as US president in 2018.
Russia has warned that US military actions against Iran are illegal.
In a TV comment, it was shown that Putin had informed the Sultan that the Russian energy company was interested in developing its relationship with Oman.
Meanwhile, Putin has announced plans to hold an Arab League group summit later this year as Moscow continues its three-year attack in Ukraine and Moscow is looking for a new partner.
After sending troops to Ukraine, Russia wiped out and slapped Western sanctions, and Russia was directed towards Asia, Africa and Arab countries for political and economic ties.
“We are planning to hold a summit between Russia and the Arab countries this year,” Putin told Omani leaders.
“Many of our friends in the Arab world support this idea,” he added, and Sultan Haisam bin Tariq Al told the summit without specifying a date and location.
The visit comes days after Putin hosted Qatar’s Emil Tamim bin Hamad al Thani in Moscow for talks with Syria and the besieged and bombed Gaza Strip. Doha is an important mediator between Israeli and Palestinian group Hamas.
The Gulf countries have acquired an ever-growing diplomatic influence as mediators of negotiations to resolve the world’s most pressing crisis, which has killed thousands of lives, including the conflict in Ukraine and the Israeli war of massacre in Gaza.
The third round of negotiations between Tehran and Washington is scheduled to take place in Oman on Saturday.
Prior to the visit, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araguchi is scheduled to visit China on April 23 at an invitation from Beijing.
The two-way will discuss issues of bilateral relations and international and regional hotspots with common concerns, Ministry spokesman Guo Zi-Kung told regular press conferences.
The visit is considered to be extremely important to deepen mutual political trust between the two countries, Goo told reporters.
Araghchi previously visited China. This was the signatories of the 2015 approval, mediated by a world powerhouse that was suppressed by Tehran’s nuclear program in December and provided substantial financial relief.
During a trip to Moscow last week, Aragut told the state television that Tehran is always in close consultation with his friends, Russia and China about nuclear issues.
