The White House called it a “very productive argument.” A Ukrainian official said the two leaders could meet again on Saturday.
Trump and Zelensky are in Rome and are attending Pope Francis’ funeral. Their meeting took place before the funeral began.
“President Trump and Zelensky met personally today and had a very productive discussion,” said White House Communications Director Stephen Chong. “Details of the meeting continue,” he said.
Zelenskyy spokesman Sergii Nykyforov said the meeting took place at St. Peter’s Cathedral and lasted for about 15 minutes.
“The leader has agreed to continue the discussion. The team is working on holding a follow-up meeting,” Nykyforov said, perhaps shortly after the funeral.
Trump said late Friday that Kiev and Moscow were “very close to a deal” over a ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict. Comments on Trump’s truth came hours after his special envoy, Steve Witkov, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
