Elections are a key political milestone after years of postponement due to political paralysis, economic collapse and health crisis.
The election is scheduled to take place in four phases throughout May, covering all governors across the country.
The Sunday vote covers six districts of Mount Lebanon. According to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), the polling station opened at 7am after election officials and candidates arrived.
The voting process went calmly, with massive security deployed by internal security forces and Lebanese forces maintaining order around the voting centre.
Logistics preparations were completed early, and security forces began an overnight deployment, ensuring a smooth election day and protecting voters.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam urged citizens to take an active role and highlighted the role of elections in promoting local governance and development. Meanwhile, President Joseph Orn, joined by the Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Justice, visited the Ministry of Home Affairs’ operational office to oversee the process as the vote began.
“We monitor local government and mayoral elections throughout the day. We want candidates to succeed and stand equal distances from everyone,” Aoun said, emphasizing that elections are a “fundamental right” and that the role of security services is limited to protecting citizens and ensuring smooth conduct of the process.
