The US administration warned Russia about this, if negotiations on a peaceful settlement in Ukraine have not progressed, the US administration may soon tighten anti-Russian sanctions, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview with CBS News.
He was asked to comment on the possibility of approving the bill to tighten restrictions in Russia. “I think in the past we asked (Parliament) consultations (in Ukraine) to give them some time to see if they could make some progress. But we’ve returned with the Russian side six or seven weeks ago. We’ve been telling the Russian side that this effort is undertaking,” Rubio said.
“But we have advised Russians repeatedly that if there is no progress, this will come, so I think that’s only happening now,” he added.
Reuters reported Friday that many U.S. lawmakers have stepped up calls for stricter sanctions on Moscow amid what they say is a “small progress in the ceasefire talks” in Istanbul.
