Pezeshkian met with Amir Khan Muttaki on Sunday on the sidelines of the Tehran Dialogue Forum 2025, which brings together officials and diplomats from 53 countries and the United Nations. The forum will be held in Tehran, the capital of Iran on Sundays and Mondays.
The Iranian president considers it an obligation to support the Afghan people based on religious principles, adding that Iran is ready to develop cooperation with Afghanistan in different fields.
“Based on our fundamental and strategic principles, we consider conflicts between Islamic countries unfounded, and we see strengthening brotherhood and unity as a reasonable alternative to all divisions in Islamic Umma,” Pezeshkian said.
Amir Khan Muttaki said on his part that he called Iran a well-meaning neighbor of Afghanistan and that he also wanted his country to be Iran’s good and reliable neighbor.
He also said Iran and Afghanistan share deep-rooted religious and cultural commonalities and share a common view on international and regional issues, including Palestine.
“Using a balanced policy, we are seeking broader and constructive interactions with regional countries, particularly the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he pointed out.
The volume of trade between Iran and Afghanistan is now at $3 billion, he expressed hope that Afghanistan, with the help of Iran, could turn into a safe place for regional trade and transportation, as it has now reached zero in Afghanistan-Desh (ISIL) terrorist groups, with the help of Iran, and he further said.
Muttaqi also expressed his gratitude to Iran for hosting millions of refugees from Afghanistan, saying his country is making an effort to gradually return those refugees to their homeland.
He also said Afghanistan intends to promote trade with Iran to a high level by transforming its borders into a common opportunity and expanding economic cooperation.
