Araguchi said on Monday that since Tehran and Riyadh normalized relations in 2023, several requests have been made to establish relations with Manama.
The diplomat said efforts were underway to reestablish Persian relations with the Gulf Arab state, and expressed his hope that those efforts would soon bear fruit.
Regarding Tehran-Cairo relations, the Iranian Foreign Minister pointed out that Iran and Egypt’s relations have been significantly expanding.
He said the presidents and foreign ministers of both countries meet several times to maintain regular phone conversations.
Bahrain, following the Saudi Arabian lawsuit, slashed diplomatic ties with Iran on January 4, 2016, with Iranian protesters furious at the Saudi government’s enforcement of prominent Shiite Sheikh Nimru Bakhir al-Nimru, and attacked diplomatic missions in Iran.
Tehran and Riyadh reached an agreement in March 2023 to restore diplomatic relations in China’s capital, Beijing, and resume missions with the embassy.
On October 21, Foreign Minister Araguchi and King Hamad of Bahrain met in Manama to discuss relations in the region and latest developments, particularly the escalation of Israeli atrocities in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
Egypt cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 1980, and changes spread between the two following Iran’s Islamic revolution and Israel’s perception. The move comes after Egypt welcomed the US-backed Pahlavi rulers.
However, longtime Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak fell into a mass uprising in 2011, resulting in warming of relations between Iran and Egypt.
In recent years, diplomatic contacts between the two countries have intensified as Egypt attempted to play a mediating role, particularly amid the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza.
