At a meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Turkmenistan on Tuesday, Iran’s oil minister Mohsen Paknejad looked at the ongoing joint committee between the two countries and its diverse agendas, saying such a meeting could promote trade exchange between the two countries.
Paknejad said Iran’s foreign policy prioritizes constructive engagement as a friendly and brotherly nation with its neighbours, particularly Turkmenistan. He added that the current administration is determined to strengthen its energy cooperation with Turkmenistan.
The Minister emphasized the rapid implementation of gas exchange agreements to transport Turkish gas through Iran to Turkey, and expressed his hope that other energy agreements, including gas imports from Turkmenistan, will advance quickly.
Meredov emphasized that Iran and Turkmenistan have enjoyed a strong historical relationship.
He has identified three important areas of discussion with Iran. Gas exports to Iran, joint development of pressure boost stations and pipelines, and gas exchanges to third countries via Iran. Turkmenistan currently produces more than 80 billion cubic meters of gas per year, with a significant portion of which could be exported in cooperation with Iran, he said.
Meredov described the rapid launch of Turkish gas exchange through Iran as evidence of strong bilateral relations. “Based on this positive experience, further steps can be taken to expand relations in this sector,” he said, adding that Turkmenistan has a major plan for gas exports to Iran.
