Iran’s Minister of Justice and International Affairs, says the Islamic Republic has received a proposal for a fifth round of indirect nuclear negotiations with the US, which is currently under investigation.
Qasem Galibabadi, a member of the Iranian consultation delegation, made the announcement on Tuesday at a meeting in the capital Tehran entitled “Unsolicited Sanctions and Access to Justice at the National, Regional and International Levels.”
“We have received a proposal for the next round of indirect consultations between Iran and the US, which is under review,” he said, but did not provide details about the content or timing of the proposed negotiations.
The announcement a day after U.S. media alleged that the US administration’s excessive demands, including “zero enrichment” on Iran’s nuclear program, left the fate of Limbo’s negotiations, a day after U.S. media allegedly anticipated the next round of Iranian-US nuclear talks “on the weekend.”
The Iranian vice minister pointed to years of US sanctions on the Islamic Republic and said the ban violates the charter of international law and international norms.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is the perfect example of the country where people lived under the sanctions regime, and these sanctions are imposed as part of a policy known as the “maximum pressure” on Iran that has led to limited access to individuals with cancer and other chronic diseases and individuals with other chronic diseases.”
“The reason is that international banks refuse to trade (for sanctions) (for sanctions), so this is not only collective destruction, but also public punishment for the people of the country.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi warned the US on Sunday against making “unrealistic demands” in consultations, saying Tehran will continue its enrichment program with or without dealing with Washington.
He said such a statement was “completely detached from the reality of negotiations.”
Iran held four rounds of indirect talks with the US to replace the 2015 deal. This is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
In 2018, US President Donald Trump escaped from a groundbreaking agreement between Iran and several other countries, giving sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions on building trust in its nuclear activities.
Iran now ensures that the US will eliminate all sanctions and not unilaterally derail new deals once again.
