Secret negotiations between Turkish and Syrian Kurdish officials have been underway since spring 2024, aimed at ending decades of conflict between Ankara and the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) and addressing Turkish concerns over Kurdish autonomy in northeastern Syria.
An informed source told the news website that debate unfolded in parallel with the trajectory of new negotiations between Turkish officials and imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Okaran. Shortly after the local elections in Turkey, a high-level meeting with Syrian Kurdish officials reportedly held last year in France and Switzerland.
The shift followed the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) in the election of President Receptacle Taip Erdogan. Aiming to weaken this opposition bloc, Erdogan’s regime began exploring new political agreements with the Kurdish forces both within and across the border.
