“The agreement is an important step towards de-escalation, peace and stability in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes region,” Guterres said in a statement, the Anadoru Agency reported.
In praise of Togo’s mediator, Qatar and African Union, President Togo, Guterres recognized the contributions of five co-enforcers designated by the East and South African Development Communities.
“I urge the parties to fully respect the commitments made in the peace agreement, including halting hostility and all other agreed measures in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2773 (2025),” he said.
The UN has “full commitment” to working closely with African Union, regional and international partners, including the Congo’s UN peacekeeping mission (Monusco) to help implement the agreement, Guterres emphasized.
Foreign ministers from two African countries have signed a long-awaited agreement to end decades of devastating conflict.
The UN said the conflict has driven away more than 7.8 million people.
