Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakuri said on Monday that the flames were incited overnight by winds reaching 40-50 kmph (25-30 mph) in the Kuyukak and Donbay regions of Izmir.

Yumakli told reporters in Izmir that helicopters, firefighting aircraft and other vehicles, as well as more than 1,000 people were trying to wipe out the fire.
Operations at Izmir Adnan Mendez airport have been suspended due to a fire, according to Turkish media.

Media footage showed teams using tractors with water trailers and helicopters, as smoke wavy with loud waves on hills marked with scorched wood.
Previously, strong winds grounded the helicopter, leaving two hydro-bombing aircraft and a massive ground crew struggling to fight the flames.
According to Governor Suleeman Elvan, the first fire broke out between Izmir’s Seferi Haisar district and Mendez districts on Sunday, spreading quickly due to winds of up to 117 kmph (75 mph).
Five areas of Seferihisar are evacuated as fires approach residential areas, the governor added.

Residents of the Urukmes village were caused by a fire and forced to cut trees to protect their homes, an eyewitness told AFP news agency by phone.
Another flame ignited at the Gaziemir landfill, 13km (8 miles) from central Izmir, spreading into nearby woodlands, threatening the Otokant industrial area, where several car dealers live.
