The meeting, held in The Hague on Tuesday at Iran’s request, was convened in response to a recent attack on Iran during the 12-day war imposed by Israel.
The Iranian ambassador for Hadhifaraivand, the Dutch, also serves as the head of Iran’s OPCW, denied Israeli invasion targeting civilians, including women, children, scientists, research centres and petrochemical sites.
Farajvand warned that serious consequences of such attacks could result, including the potential release of dangerous chemicals, infrastructure damage, and long-term risks to public health and ecological stability.
He said Israel violated international humanitarian law and ignored binding international norms when carrying out the attack. The ambassador also said Israel is not a party in a treaty banning weapons of mass destruction, referring to previous attacks on Syria and Lebanon chemicals.
In response, Iran proposed the establishment of a working group within the OPCW to develop a binding mechanism aimed at preventing attacks on chemical facilities during armed conflict.
