President Masoud Pezeshkian traveled to Azerbaijan to join the 17th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and highlighted Iran’s commitment to promoting regional cooperation and stability.
President Pezeschkian landed at Huzuli International Airport on Friday, where he was accepted with an official welcome and honorary guard. He then traveled to Khankendi, the host city of this year’s summit, scheduled for June 3rd to 4th.
The Iranian president is expected to be invited to Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev to give keynote speeches and hold bilateral meetings with several other heads of state attending the summit.
The summit brings together leaders from all eco-member countries, including Turkish President Recept Tayyip Erdogan, Pakistan Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif and Kyrgyzstan President Sadir Japarov.
These high-level discussions are part of the organization’s ongoing efforts to deepen economic, technological and cultural cooperation across Central Asia, South Asia, the Caucasus and West Asia.
Speaking at Tehran’s Merabad airport, Pezeshkian pointed out the importance of deepening relations between regional states.
He expressed his hope that his visit would boost political interaction, contribute to regional peace and stability, and strengthen cooperation between neighboring countries.
“The greater the coordination and cooperation between the countries in the region, the less greed the enemy will create anxiety,” he said.
Eco, founded in 1985 by Iran, Turkie and Pakistan, has since expanded to include Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Today it serves as a major platform for regional economic integration.
The theme of the 17th Summit is “A New Ecovision for a Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Future.”
