At least 27 people have been killed, and others, including at least 20 girls attending Camp Mystic after the floods in central Texas, officials said late Friday. Authorities reported on Saturday that at least 850 people have been rescued but efforts to find people who have not yet been recorded for continuance.
By Saturday, rescuers had begun the tough job of restoring the bodies of children who had been wiped out by Texas’ deadly flash floods caused by a powerful storm that killed dozens of people.
The exact number of missing people was not immediately known, according to the Guardian, but 24 of them were girls who were attending Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp along the Guadalupe River. Heavy rains have lifted the river 26 feet (8 meters) (8 meters) just 45 minutes before dawn on Friday, washing away homes and vehicles.
Some of the disaster victims have now been recovered and have been officially identified. One of the nine-year-old girls, Renee Sumagistra, has been confirmed to be among the dead by her uncle.
