Speaking at the BRICS summit on Brazil’s Environment and Global Health, Araguchi said politically motivated sanctions, particularly targeting the Islamic Republic, have created serious obstacles for countries seeking to deal with the devastating effects of climate change.
He called such measures “unjust” and contradicted the global goal of combating environmental degradation and achieving sustainable development.
He emphasized that climate change is no longer a distant threat, but an escalating reality of the present day. “Rising temperatures, declining water resources, massive wildfires, ecosystem destruction and climate emissions have become part of millions of people’s daily lives,” he added.
Located in one of the world’s most climatic and whimsical regions, Iran has launched a national programme focused on water management, renewable energy development and ecosystem recovery, Araghchi said.
However, he emphasized that “climate justice” is needed, including historical accountability by developed countries and their support in fundraising, and that clean technologies need to be transferred to developing countries.
He also criticized the wealthy countries for their failure to maintain their climate commitments and was historically responsible for many of the global environmental damages.
In another part of his speech, Aragut condemns recent attacks on Israeli and the US Iranian nuclear facilities, calling for reckless acts that threaten not only international law but human and ecological safety.
He warned that these attacks could cause irreversible environmental hazards by nuclear-armed states to nuclear-armed states under full surveillance of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Israel launched a war of attack on Iran on June 13th. At that time, he assassinated several high-ranking military commanders and nuclear scientists with the declared purpose of overthrowing the government of the Islamic Republic. In the course of an unprovoked war, the Israeli regime and the United States attacked Iran’s civilian nuclear facilities.
In response, Iran implemented a True Promise III stage of almost 20 stages against Israel. The war halted on June 24th after Israel unilaterally agreed to a ceasefire.
