A report published on Tuesday in the semi-dedicated Fars News Agency said Iran should impose economic penalties on Germany in response to Berlin’s growing anti-Iran rhetoric.
The report said Iran should increase tariffs on manufacturing and medical devices imports from Germany, generating significant revenue for the German government and businesses.
However, Iran said it could adopt more aggressive economic measures by imposing restrictions on the movement of ships sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, which are registered or insured by Germany, or the movement of ships carrying cargo to German ports.
“Upending such measures will increase the cost of Germany’s hostile actions and reactions to the Iranian state, creating economic and political deterrence for other actors seeking to go down the same route,” read part of the report.
Iranian authorities have previously warned that the country will close the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf if it is militarily threatened by hostile forces.
However, limiting the movement of cargo ships has never been tried and not mentioned in warnings by senior Iranian officials.
In a statement made on June 17, just four days after Israel launched its war on attacks against Iran, German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz praised him for describing it as “the dirty work that Israel is doing for all of us.”
