With a comprehensive and collaborative framework tailored to the needs of emerging economies, BRICS is apart to add collective momentum to the progress of the Global South, which is seeking more equitable development opportunities, as argued by a think tank at Xinhua.
In the report entitled “BRICS Cooperation: Advancing Collective Progress in the Global South,” Xinhua Institute, a think tank belonging to the Xinhua Conference, provides a thorough overview of the evolution of BRICS cooperation, systematically highlighting its key achievements and contemporary importance.
It presents a meaningful pathway for global South countries to pursue shared prosperity in an increasingly complex international environment, highlighting the strong responsibility and leadership that BRICS countries present as the forefront of the Global South.
By amplifying the voices of countries that have long been marginalized with global decision-making, BRICS has taken on the role of stabilizing forces in an increasingly fractured world.
The expansion of BRICS shows a qualitative leap in its representativeness and influence. In January this year, Indonesia, the largest economy in ASEAN, officially joined BRICS. Today, BRICS countries account for more than half the world’s population, nearly 30% of global GDP and more than 50% of global economic growth. This means the historical transformation of global southern electricity from the surroundings to the centre of the international arena.
With enhanced appeal, stronger representation and wider geographic reach, the larger BRICS is reconstructing the global political and economic landscape. The increasing diversity of BRICS further highlights its commitment to inclusion and its role as a true representative of the Global South.
The expansion of BRICS’s cooperation highlighted the priorities of development in emerging economies and encouraged dialogue on an equal footing. This reflects the growing consensus that effective multilateral solutions should involve broader voices, particularly those previously excluded from global governance.
In fact, BRICS has provided hopeful and practical development models for developing countries through initiatives focusing on infrastructure investment, technology transfer and financial integration. For Global South members tackling infrastructure challenges, food insecurity and climate vulnerabilities, BRICS provides much-needed support.
More importantly, BRICS speaks in one collective voice for fairness and justice in global governance. It firmly opposes exclusive “small blocks” while supporting shared progress, mutual respect and equality of sovereignty.
BRICS countries are committed to the practice of true multilateralism, maintaining the international system with the United Nations at a centre, and supporting and strengthening the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization.
Within platforms such as the UN and the G20, BRICS countries are strengthening policy communication, adjusting their positions, and constructively implementing reforms to the global governance system. This has greatly improved the voices of developing countries, their ability to set agenda, and their impact on international rulemaking.
In an ever-evolving international landscape, BRICS focuses on consensus building and practical cooperation, continuing to inject more justice, equity and predictability into the international economic and political order.
BRICS defends a more equitable world where inclusive development will replace exclusion, outweighing the singular dominance of collective voices as they shape the trajectory of humanity.
