“Iran’s nuclear issue has something to do with peace and security in the Middle East, and there is also an interest in the international non-proliferation regime,” Guo Zi-Kung, a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, said at a press conference in Beijing, according to the Anadoru Agency.
“We always believe that we need to use a diplomatic approach to solving Iran’s nuclear issue. This is the only correct way to do it,” Guo said.
The Beijing statement comes when three European countries known as Iran and collectively known as E3 agreed to resume nuclear talks in Istanbul’s major Turkish city this Friday.
“We call on all political parties to walk in the same direction and contribute to the trajectory of political reconciliation on Iran’s nuclear issue,” Guo said.
In discussions with Foreign Minister Abbas Aragut last Thursday, top diplomats from the UK, France, Germany and the EU emphasized the urgency to return to diplomacy for the nuclear deal. Otherwise, they were ready to trigger a UN “snapback” mechanism.
The talks between Tehran and the United States were held through Omani mediators until Israel’s surprise attack on Iran on June 13, sparking a 12-day war. The attack came just two days before plans for negotiations for the sixth round in Muscat, Omani’s capital.
