“This is not something that major countries should do,” said Guo Zi-Kung, a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, at a press conference in Beijing when asked about Washington’s effective decision on December 31, 2026, the Anadoru Agency reported.
Expressing “solid” support for UNESCO, Guo said several countries “remorse” the US decision.
China “urges all countries to reaffirm their commitment to multilateralism,” Guo said, referring to the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
The US announced its third withdrawal from UNESCO on Tuesday, citing the organization’s enrollment as a member of Palestine, in conflict with the Trump administration’s “America First” foreign policy.
However, Guo said that UNESCO’s purpose is to promote international cooperation in education, science and culture, and to protect peace and common development.
