The French president announced his decision on X on Thursday evening, saying he hoped it would bring peace to the region.
Macron released a letter sent to Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian authorities, confirming France’s intention to become the first major Western force to recognize the Palestinian state.
“Trustrating to our historic commitment to just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the Palestinian state,” Macron said.
“We will make this strict presentation at the UN General Assembly next September.”
“Today’s urgent priority is to end the war in Gaza and save civilians.”
“We must ultimately build up the Palestinian state, ensure its survival rate, accept its demilitarization, and contribute to all the security of the Middle East by fully recognizing Israel,” he wrote on social media.
