The Brazilian government was ready for a dialogue with the US, but has now been working since August 1 to properly respond to the 50% tariffs set by the White House for certain products, President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva said.
“We have always been open to dialogue,” the head of state wrote on his page in X.
“We are currently working to address US tariff measures,” Lula da Silva said.
Only Brazilian citizens and institutions have the right to determine the country’s path, including its relationship with the US, he added.
US President Donald Trump has announced 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods imports since August 1, explaining the measure by the need to overcome the trade deficit. Lula Da Silva has vowed to introduce a Tit-for-Tat tariff if Washington does not reconsider its decision. The Brazilian leader later expressed his hope that the Brazilian delegation could achieve revisions to the tariffs through negotiations.
