“China always guarantees energy supply in a way that serves our national interests. No coercion and pressure will achieve. China will firmly defend its sovereignty, security and development interests,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Commenting on the talks, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent said when purchasing Russian oil that China is “taking their sovereignty very seriously.”
“We don’t want to hinder their sovereignty, so they want to pay 100% tariffs,” Bescent said.
He called for “stricken” Chinese negotiators, but assured that Chinese resistance would not hinder consultations.
“I believe we have a business production,” he added.
However, Gabriel Wildau, managing director of Teneo Consulting Company, has expressed doubts about the possibility of implementing the threat from US President Donald Trump to impose a 100% obligation.
“To realize these threats will derail all recent advances and probably kill opportunities,” Trump and Chinese national president Xi Jinping will announce a trade deal if they meet in the fall,” emphasized Wildow.
