The ship carrying 154 Ethiopian immigrants sank into the Gulf of Aden near the Avian province, according to Abdusattur Esoyev, director of Yemen’s International Organization for Immigration (IOM).
Esoev told the AP that the bodies of 54 migrants had been washed onshore in Khanfaal district. Fourteen other people have died and were taken to the morgue at the hospital in Zinzibar, the capital of the Avian province on Yemen’s southern coast.
The remaining passengers were still estimated to be missing and dead, but Esoev added, but only one migrant survived the shipwreck.
Avian’s Security Bureau said in a statement that a massive search and rescue operation has been launched in response to the large-scale casualties. Authorities reported that many bodies have been found scattered along the extensive stretches of the coastline.
