In a letter to President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the lawmaker wrote:
According to the Anadoru Agency, lawmakers stressed the recent pledge that French President Emmanuel Macron would recognize the Palestinian state at a UN meeting in September.
“We are encouraging governments of other countries that do not yet recognize Palestinian states, including the United States, to do so,” the letter states.
Locanna, the leader of the initiative, told Axios “we only just started outreaching last week” and “the reaction is overwhelming.”
“This recognition comes from embracing the 22-state Arab League plan, which was just passed this week, calling for recognition of the Palestinian state and Israel as a Jewish democratic state,” Kanna said.
He noted that over 147 countries recognize the Palestinian state, saying:
France, the UK, Canada and Malta have indicated plans to recognize the Palestinian state in September, but Australia shows that it could continue.
Spain, Norway and Ireland officially recognized the Palestine state in May 2024, followed by Slovenia in June, bringing the total number of UN members who recognized Palestine in 149 of the 193.
Israeli forces have pursued a brutal attack in Gaza since October 7, 2023, killing more than 60,300 Palestinians. The relentless bombardment devastated the enclave, leading to food shortages and deaths caused by starvation, the AA report concluded.
