Local authorities said teams of the Army and disaster response forces have arrived in the area, workers are trying to save those trapped under debris and sludge, authorities added.
Television news channels showed water, mud and debris spiked the mountains, cleaning homes and roads.
According to an update to a video shared by the state’s prime minister’s office, the landslide has passed through the Darari village and filled several homes.
“A large landslide in the Kelgad region near Harsil struck the Dalari village, causing sudden debris and water flows through the settlement,” the Indian Army’s central order said in a post in X.
Uttarakhand is prone to flooding and landslides.
In 2021, at least 200 people were killed when flash floods wiped out two hydroelectric projects in the state.
India’s Himalayas have around 10,000 glaciers, many of which have retreated due to the warming climate.
