Charity Amrev Flying Doctors was on their way to Hargesa, Somalia, when Cessna plane took off from Wilson Airport on Thursday afternoon and fell into flames at home construction in Nairobi’s Jislai region.
Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula said four people on the plane, including a doctor, a nurse and a pilot, have been killed.
Investigators have been dispatched to the scene of the crash to establish the cause.
The plane lost both radio and radar contact with air traffic control just three minutes after takeoff, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said.
The charity said there were four crew members and Amref staff.
“At this point, we are fully working with the relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation,” Amref CEO Stephen Gitau said in a statement.
The Kenya Defense Forces and the National Police Agency were deployed to the scene to carry out search and recovery efforts.
Eyewitness Patricia Combo said she was riding in a taxi with her friends and was in the taxi as she heard a loud, loud flash of red light in front of them.
“We’ve finished our trip, as we heard people screaming and running before our phones were gone and smoke was swirling around, the report added.
