The Atlanta Police Department said the incident that took place on Friday involved a “single shooter” who is currently dead.
According to the city of Atlanta, there were no reports of civilian injuries resulting from the shooting, the BBC reported.
Citing an unknown law enforcement officer, US media reported the theory that the suspect believes he is ill as a result of the coronavirus vaccine.
Media reports also suggested that the man’s father called law enforcement on the day of the shooting, where he believed his son was a suicide.
CDC director Susan Monares said the centre was “grief” with the attack.
“A brave local law enforcement officer gave him life and another person was injured after a gunman fired fire at at least four CDC buildings,” she wrote in an X post.
“DeKalb County Police, CDC Security and Emory University responded instantly and decisively, helping to prevent further harm to staff and the community.”
During a press conference Friday, police said they noticed reports of active shooters at local time (21:50 BST) at the road intersection in front of the CDC campus.
Officers from multiple agencies, including federal and state partners, responded, police added.
