US President Donald Trump met Ukrainian counterpart Voldymee Zelensky at the White House before other European leaders joined.
Speaking to reporters after his meeting with Zelensky with him, Trump said that the European countries “we’re there, they’re Europe and we’re going to help them too. We’ll be involved.”
At the start of the greeting, Trump calls today’s meeting “very important” and believes progress is being made. He also said something could come out of his meeting with Putin, Al Jazeera reported.
Before the reporter’s questions began, Zelensky eagerly thanked Trump for his “personal effort to stop the murder and stop the war.”
With him, he thanked her for the letter he sent to Putin on Friday in a letter he brought to Melania Trump, causing a light letter for Ukrainian children lured to Russia.
Trump said the war continues to create great difficulties for Ukraine, and his predecessor, Joe Biden, has repeatedly made doubtful claims that it was blamed on Russian invasions.
“This is not my war, it’s Joe Biden’s war. He’s someone who has a lot to do with this event and we want to end it,” he said.
“And we hope it ends for everyone. The Ukrainian people are suffering incredibly.”
He initially thought the war would be easy to end, but added that it was “hard.”
Zelensky’s consent came after Trump said that if Monday’s White House meeting went well, the three leaders could meet.
“We are ready for trilateral preparation,” he said.
Such a conference will be held to negotiate the end of the Russian war against Ukraine.
Before the summit, Trump urged Ukraine to abandon its hopes of reclaiming Crimea, which Russia seized in 2014, and its ambition to join NATO. Most of the world cast the annexation of the Russian peninsula illegally.
Trump said he hopes to call Russian President Vladimir Putin after meeting Zelensky and European leaders.
Prior to Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s meeting with Trump, EU leaders met with Zelenskyy this morning at the Ukrainian Embassy in DC.
