Australia has denounced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after describing the Australian prime minister as weak, and the well-known minister said Netanyahu merges his ability to harm with those killing strength.
In an interview with Australia’s national broadcaster on Wednesday, Home Minister Tony Burke said “strength is not measured by the number of people who can blow up or the number of hungry children.”
Burke’s comments follow Netanyahu’s attack on Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on social media this Tuesday. He said history remembered him as “a weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australian Jews.”
Speaking about ABC’s Radio National Breakfast Program, Burke described Netanyahu’s attack as a manifestation of Israel’s “rushouts” against countries that have taken steps to recognize the Palestinian state.
“Strength is measured accurately by what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese did. That’s when there’s a decision that Israel knows doesn’t like and he goes straight to Benjamin Netanyahu,” Burke said.
“He has a conversation, says exactly what we’re trying to do, and he has the opportunity for objections to become people, and he hears that, makes it public, and does what we need to do.”
Relations between Australia and Israel, historically strong ally, have gradually deteriorated over the past few months due to rising tensions related to the Israeli massacre in Gaza.
Following last week’s Canberra’s declaration on the perception of the Palestinian state, the bond has become particularly controversial.
On Monday, Australia declared the cancellation of the visa for Simcharosman, a lawmaker affiliated with the Zionist Party of Israel’s far-right Mahdar religion and a member of Netanyahu’s dominant coalition.
Shortly after that decision, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saa announced that he had cancelled the Australian diplomat’s visa to Palestinian authorities.
Then came Netanyahu’s social media explosion. “History will remember Albanese about what he is. A weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australian Jews,” he wrote on social media platform X.
Israel faces an increase in international pressure from many traditional allies regarding the extent of human suffering caused by the war on the massacre in Gaza.
The Israeli military has fought a brutal war with Gaza since October 7, 2023, denied an international appeal against ceasefire, killing at least 62,064 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
The relentless airstrikes destroyed the area and caused considerable food shortages.
