Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Aragci held a joint telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Kaja Karas, the head of the UK, France, Germany and the EU’s Foreign Affairs Bureau on Friday.
During the call, Iranian diplomats explained the principle status of Iran’s Islamic Republic, regarding the so-called snapback mechanism and the responsibility of the three European countries and the European Union.
Iran’s top diplomats once again stressed that European countries lack legal and moral rights to rely on mechanisms, warning that snapbacks would have consequences.
In response to repeated proposals to expand UN Security Council resolution 2231 to allow time to negotiate, Araguchi said the UN Security Council must decide more than that.
He noted that Iran has a principled attitude on the issue but is not involved in the process.
However, the Islamic Republic discussed and exchanged opinions with friends on the Security Council regarding the consequences of such actions, the Iranian foreign minister emphasized.
The European Troika Foreign Minister has expressed his readiness to pursue diplomatic solutions to address what is called concerns about Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme, along with the EU’s foreign policy director.
At the end of the call, it was decided that the EU would move forward on Tuesday at the level of deputy ministers, with Iran’s meetings with European countries.
The Iranian foreign minister has already repeated the warning from Iran on Wednesday in an interview with the IRNA that European troikas calling the so-called snapback mechanism are illegal, but that Tehran has prepared to respond to potential attempts to restore non-sanctions on the country.
