Taiwan announced it plans to produce or procure approximately 50,000 fully indigenous military drones from local manufacturers over the next two years, in line with its strengthening defence capabilities.
Speaking to local media on condition of anonymity, Taiwan’s senior defense secretary emphasized that the experience of the Ukrainian war shows that drones play a key role in modern warfare and that Taiwan’s military must adapt to this reality.
He added, for the first time, specialized drone training has been added to basic military training programs, and domestic technology companies have been mobilized to meet military needs for the design and production of advanced drones.
According to AFP, the initiative is part of Taiwan’s broader efforts to reduce dependence on foreign supply chains and increase self-sufficiency in defense.
