The protests in Makassar, the largest city in Sulawesi, have plunged into chaos outside the state and local city council buildings. Both of these were set for fires, and the vehicle was torched as protesters threw a cocktail of rocks and Molotov.
Rahmat Mappatoba said three people were killed as a result of a fire in the Makassar City Council building.
Two of the victims were local council staff, while the other was a civil servant. Two people died at the scene and a third died at the hospital.
At least four people were injured in the fire and were being treated at the hospital, officials said.
