In a speech at the Shanghai Plus Summit in Tianjin, China, President Peshshkian said that the expansion of SCO Plus’s organizational dialogue with other like-minded countries is also a valuable opportunity to deepen and develop these collaborations.
Pezeschkian noted that since the end of the Cold War, unilateral action has hampered human desire to perpetuate peace, but the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) continues to live up to hopes for joint efforts between nations.
The president said the world needs a new understanding and framework for global governance. He emphasized that, thanks to the contributions of all member states, the general discourse within the SCO consistently aims for peace and security through justice and development.
The annual SCO Summit is a unique opportunity for dialogue and exchange between countries that share common concerns about peace, cooperation and the pursuit of a more equitable and safe world. Over the past 30 years, SCO has promoted new models of regional and international cooperation based on mutual trust and respect for diversity rather than hostility and conflict of identity.
Pezeshkian noted that the SCO experience shows that cooperation, particularly in developing and emerging economies, can provide practical solutions to global challenges such as economic inequality, sanctions, climate change and the cross-border security crisis.
The President reiterated that all countries, regardless of size or wealth, should have equal rights and representation in global governance. He expressed his hope that SCOs will further highlight its role in addressing important global issues, particularly issues that undermine justice and development.
Additionally, Pezeshkian called for a more serious agenda on cooperation with the global tropical countries, particularly in financial cooperation and co-investment in infrastructure. He affirmed Iran’s preparation to contribute to these efforts, leveraging its scientific resources, energy supply and strategic transport status.
Reflecting recent geopolitical tensions, President Pezeshkian denounced the imposition of peace by force, citing the painful experiences of Iranian people under various sanctions and military attacks. He repeated Iran’s commitment to diplomatic resolution in its peaceful nuclear program, claiming that military attacks have proven ineffective against the resilient Iranian spirit.
In light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, he urged the SCO to take more organized initiatives in peacebuilding, highlighting the urgent need for a comprehensive plan to address the longstanding conflict in the Western Asia region. He emphasized that without a solution to the Palestinian problem, a global plan of peace and justice would not be successful.
In conclusion, President Pezeshkian thanked the Chinese government and the people for successfully holding the summit, expressing Iran’s support for President Xi Jinping’s constructive view on the need for reform in global governance, viewing such an initiative as an important step in achieving a more equitable world.
