Lebanon’s Hezbollah is not only a military group, but a political, social and cultural movement that influenced the fate of Lebanon as a whole. Contrary to the propaganda of some Western media, the movement is not limited to southern Lebanon, but has a popular position and foundation among various segments of Lebanese society. Even among the Lebanese forces, which act like police, Hezbollah has many supporters.
In reality, Hezbollah is the only force that can oppose the occupation of a Zionist regime. Experiences of resistance over the past decades show that if it were not for this group, South Lebanon had been fully occupied by Israel many times. For this reason, many Lebanese and officials agree that the country’s existence depends on the continuation of Hezbollah’s defensive capabilities.
The Amal Movement and other Lebanese political groups ultimately cannot separate themselves from Hezbollah’s support. This is because the party has become a force to play a critical role not only in the military, but also in the political and social fields.
If Hezbollah one day retreats armed from the scene, Israel will undoubtedly attack Lebanon. The administration is not worried about expanding its boundaries and occupying southern Lebanon in order to realize its expansionist dream and establish a greater Israel. Therefore, the argument to disarm Hezbollah means effectively preparing a position for Israeli invasion.
Hezbollah cannot be disarmed, and political and economic pressures have yet to bring about consequences. If the Lebanese government also wants to seriously engage in this issue, it will face strong opposition from Lebanese tribes, factions and people. Therefore, the idea of disarming Hezbollah in the current situation is not realistic.
The party is not only a military force, but also a deep socio-political movement defending the integrity of Lebanon’s territorial integrity. The existence of Hezbollah is essential to Lebanon’s security and independence, and internal or external movements cannot ignore this reality.
