In his address to the virtual meeting through video conferencing, the Iranian president said that one of the biggest threats to justice and stability in the modern international order is the increased unilateral action and the instrumental use of sanctions.
He argued that unilateral policies not only put the national interests of independent countries at risk, but also disrupt global cooperation and hamper sustainable development.
Pezeschkian emphasized the urgent need for a significant overhaul of the global governance structure. He called for a reassessment of the structure and function of the UN Security Council and reforms to the international financial system. He emphasized that groups such as BRICS and other global Southern institutions are specially responsible for guiding a transition to a multipolar, democratic and equitable order in which developing countries can hear voices.
The president pointed to recent geopolitical tensions and the growing impact of climate change as a threat to economic growth and international peace. He criticized the disproportionate influence of several powerful countries and the politicization of economic tools.
The President proposed several initiatives for BRICS during his virtual speech. The initiatives include reforming international financial structures, encouraging comprehensive multilateralism by strengthening the United Nations to amplify the voices of developing countries, ensuring equitable access to essential resources through global public goods cooperation, establishing mechanisms to support members facing illegal sanctions, and promoting sustainable development by fostering innovation and cooperation in the green and digital economies.
Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to active cooperation within the BRICS, highlighting that effective measures against unilateral measures will benefit not only member states but the international community as a whole. He highlighted the importance of strengthening multilateralism and concluded with adherence to sustainable development principles for a better future.
