A key joint agreement has been signed, aimed at strengthening cooperation and coordination between Iran and Iraq in the fight against drug trafficking. It focuses on the management of narcotics and psychedelic drugs in accordance with international treaties.
Hossein Zolfakari, Secretary-General of Iran’s Drug Management Headquarters (DCHQ), attended the meeting on Friday. The visit marked the second session of the Joint Committee, which aimed to discuss the implementation of the contract in Baghdad and future actions.
The signed memorandum highlights a variety of initiatives, including training and capacity building, security measures and technical cooperation. Key components of the contract include increasing control of border intersections, strengthening the strength of law enforcement through mutual training workshops, and strengthening the scientific expertise of experts in demand reduction, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.
In a meeting with Iranian official Governor Nashif Jasim Al-Kattabi, Governor of Karbara, he highlights a balanced strategy in combating drug trafficking in the Islamic Republic, aiming to involve the community in prevention, treatment and job creation. He noted that the country’s Drug Control Act is currently under review to increase its effectiveness.
Zolfakari also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation in the fields of politics, security and economics. He recognized drug trafficking as a serious threat to families and society, underscoring the need to share prevention and treatment experiences between the two countries.
