“This year’s #IAEAGC begins at a time of serious global tensions. Military conflict, terrorism, erosion of nuclear norms and widening inequality are testing our resolve,” Rafael Grossi, Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), wrote on his X account on Monday.
“We are working with Iran on a practical step aimed at resuming full implementation of domestic safeguards,” Grossi said, referring to his speech at the 69th IAEA General Conference.
“We” examined past nuclear activities in Syria, and the country agreed to cooperate with full transparency, claiming that “the threat of a nuclear accident remains real at all five nuclear sites in Ukraine,” and that it monitors the safe discharge of medical water in Fukushima.
“We are also seeing a ‘return to realism’ regarding nuclear power. The numbers speak for themselves. By 2050, nuclear power capacity is expected to be 2.5 times higher. Nearly 40 countries are developing nuclear weapons for the first time. And @Worldbank is ready to support nuclear projects.
“Through #RaySofHope, we help save lives in 40 countries by expanding access to cancer care. Through #Atoms4Food, we help increase food security, improve crop resilience and protect water. Through #nutecplastics, we help 100 countries monitor microplastics pollution in the ocean and promote preparation of more than 50 plastic waste like Zodiac.
“In December, we will hold our first IAEA symposium on artificial intelligence and nuclear energy, bringing together the nuclear and technology sectors to explore how AI can be empowered and fostering nuclear innovation.
“This week, #scientificforum will focus on water atoms, highlighting how nuclear science supports better management of the planet’s most valuable resources.”
“And this Wednesday we mark the inauguration of the IAEA’s new Visitor Center in Saberdorf, where modernization of the laboratory is expected to be completed and fully operational by the end of the year.”
