Antonio Guterres responded to questions from a reporter at the United Nations on Tuesday at the UN, saying it is essential to build trust through dialogue.
“My appeal to Iran and other forces is to use diplomacy and create conditions of trust so that it can be avoided,” the UN Secretary-General said.
Guterres added that he has been in contact with both sides and aims to encourage discussion.
“Of course I provide my good office, but it all depends on diplomatic efforts made to establish the trust needed to avoid snapback,” Guterres said.
Last month, France, Germany and the UK sparked a UN snapback sanctions mechanism in the 2015 international nuclear deal that expired in part with Iran.
The move launched a 30-day window for diplomacy before sanctions took effect on October 18th.
