Peskov told the Russian press RBC that Romanian prosecutor Alex Florencia’s accusations of Russian interference in the presidential election were not in line with reality, the Anadoru Agency (AA).
“No, it doesn’t match (the truth). Let’s remember Washington criticised Russia for intervening in the election (2016) and trying to destabilise it. It admitted that it’s not true. It’s exactly the same,” he said.
Florenda has accused Russia of orchestrading “hybrid operations” targeting Romania, including four Russian-linked companies that manage the bots and a fake online profile reaching over 1.3 million people.
The Romanian presidential election, which ended in May, was a recurring repetition of previous polls. The original election process was suspended by the Romanian Constitutional Court in late 2024 after the first round of nationalist candidate Calin Georgescu ended in the first round on November 24th.
The court’s ruling cited allegations of illegal campaign funding, cyberattacks targeting election digital infrastructure, and unproven Russian interference.
In the subsequent spill vote, Nixondan, an independent pro-European candidate and mayor of Bucharest, was elected, becoming the country’s fifth president.
